Eighteenth Century Relatives
Map*of Washington County, Pennsylvania as it looked when it was founded in 1781.   Peter Winterode's family lived in East Bethlehem township for about 15 years before moving to Ohio around 1803.  It's possible their daughter Mary wedded Jacob Bare there or nearby.
*(I printed it from the internet long ago; the link to it no longer works so I scanned my copy and put it here.  The source is a book called History of Washington County by John C. Ruple.)
Kopp Cemetery, north of Wooster, Ohio,  markers for Henry & Elizabeth Hoffeins, their daughters Mary, Elizabeth, and Malinda, and their granddaughter Sarah Jane Showalter.

A cautionary tale about visiting old cemeteries -- while gently pressing my fingers against Mary's stone to see if I could "read" it, it tumbled down toward me and would have certainly crushed my feet if I had been a moment too slow.  Tread very lightly when approaching your ancestors where they sleep!

Other Bare ancestral information
My "Bear notes" from various library and historical society stops across southern Pennsylvania in August 2002.  More notes, this time gleaned from the internet, about those early Bears.
Extracts of Bares from volumes 1 through 4 of Smith's Federal Land Series, which abstracts land patent and warrant information contained in the National Archives and various library collections.  Tract maps from volume I for the areas in southwestern Ohio I'm especially interested in: Preble/Montgomery county "Congress lands" and Warren county "between the Miamis".
