MUSIC
Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (click here if accessing from off campus)
The premiere music encyclopedia in English.

American Musicological Society (AMS)
Professional organization for musicologists who focus primarily on musics with written traditions, particularly those associated with the concert hall. It publishes the Journal of the American Musicological Society.

Society for American Music (SAM)
Formerly the Sonneck Society, this organization is devoted to the study and promotion of American music in all its varieties.

Center for Black Music Research (CBMR)
A research center and archive for the study of African and African-derived musical expressions, encompassing vernacular and concert musics. Its publications include Black Music Research Journal.

Worldwide Music Internet Resources
Possibly the largest collection of music-related Internet linksÑto organizations, record labels, fan web pages, and much more.

Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM)
The major U.S.-based professional organization for scholars studying the broad range of musics in the world. Contrary to popular belief, ethnomusicology is about the study of all kinds of music, not just those emanating from outside the United States or western Europe. The focus of such research is on how music fits into and affects culture in the broadest sense.

Institute of Jazz Studies (IJS)
Archive of recordings, clippings, and periodicals for scholars interested in serious jazz research.

Center for Jazz Studies (CJS)
Newly opened research center at Columbia University devoted to the broad study of jazz examining its status as music and through its impact on literature, visual art, film and culture more generally.

International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM)
Organization for scholars of rock and popular musics.

International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM)
Funded by UNESCO, this organization is like SEM, but with a more international focus. It publishes the Yearbook for Traditional Music, formerly the Yearbook of the International Folk Music Council.

RILM Abstracts of Musical Literature (UM Only)
Index of music-related books, essays and journal articles. A good starting point for some research projects.

The Music Index (UM Only, requires login)
Similar to RILM, with more coverage from the popular press. A good search would combine results from the two databases.

Other Music-Related
AMG All Music Guide
Ever wanted to know more about a particular performer, recording or style of music? This is perhaps one of the first places to go. While you may disagree with the opinions of some of the reviewers, this site is still an invaluable source.

CDNow
A commercial site for ordering compact discs, DVDs, videos and other items. If an item is in print, thereÕs a good chance youÕll be able to find it and order it from them.

Descarga
Similar to CDNow, except its focus is on salsa, Latin jazz, merengue and other forms of Latin popular and traditional music.

Jazz Journalists Association
Links and information about and for jazz writers (and those interested in jazz writing).

If you know of other interesting faculty websites or are developing your own, plese send me a URL and I will add it to the list.
