Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM)
The major U.S.-based professional organization for scholars studying the broad
range of musics in the world. Contrary to popular belief, ethnomusicology is

the United States or western Europe. The focus of such research is on how music
fits into and affects culture in the broadest sense.
Institute

serious jazz research.
Center for Jazz Studies (CJS)

International Association for the Study
of Popular Music (IASPM)

International Council

Funded by UNESCO, this organization is like SEM, but with a more international
focus. It publishes the Yearbook for Traditional Music, formerly the Yearbook

RILM
Abstracts of Musical Literature (UM Only)
Index of music-related books, essays and journal articles. A good starting point
for some research projects.
The Music Index (UM Only, requires
login)
Similar to RILM, with more coverage from the popular press. A good search would
combine results from the two databases.

some sort of qualitative endorsement. It is simply a collection of sites I found
when developing my own faculty website. If you know of other interesting faculty
websites or are developing your own, plese send me a URL and I will add it to
the list.
