John H. Burnett married Mary (Molly) ?? and had 3 children: William Burnett born 1774, John D. Burnett born 1776 (my line) and Frances Burnett born circa 1778. John H. Burnett served in the Revolutionary War from Amherst Co., VA and died at Valley Force circa 1778-1779. In the Amherst Co. VA Court Order Book you will find Mary Burnett receiving supplies for the service of her husband and then she is called widow of John Burnett. Mary Burnett remarried Philip Stephens in 1780 in Amherst Co., VA That is why Frances Burnett is called the daughter of Philip and Mary Stephens, as she is the step daughterof Philip Stephens. Frances and John Bates went to Georgia and Frances died in 1856. Philip Stephens will can be found in Roane Co., TN in 1830. All of Mary's children are named but I think Frances was omitted. ============ Subj: Re: TURNERs Date: 96-02-16 18:21:27 EST From: mlsaps@mcn.net To: NCreed@aol.com Nyla, THat's why I sent out a query. I could use some help! My husband's great-grandfather was William Ellis Turner, born Jan. 15, 1852, in Kentucky. I don't have a county, or names of parents. Next thing we know of him was that he married in Texas in 1885. The morticians records have nothing of help, and his remaining 94 year old daughter either never heard anything to help, or doesn't remember! Can you offer suggestions? How do I get involved in your mailing list? Thanks! I'm sending you my Turner document. I've never done family group charts, etc., and gone directly to the stage of writing a book for my family. So my format is a bit different from most. Besides, I can store many of my thoughts, sources and strategies in the text, so I can remember where I went and need to go! It's a word processing document, done on MSWord, in Mac 5.1 format. But most wp's should be able to convert it. Let me know if you have a problem. To answer some of your questions: >on one. And that's all I needed. Try looking for birth records of William Ellis Turner's children. One of this might list the birth of their father. How about the 94-year- old-aunt. Can you find her birth record? Just a thought. I've not looked for her birth record. I do have her brother's (my husband's grand- father), and it is a delayed certificate, done after the death of his father and mother. >-Where in Texas did he marry? Who did he marry? That might be a clue for someone on the mailing list. Also, do you have the marriage record? What county? Answers will be found in my document. I do have their marriage record, but only their own copy. I don't believe I ever found the county document. They were married in West, in McLennan Co, but the license was obtained across the line in Hillsboro Co. An intriguing note on their own copy of the certificate was "Marriage attended by" and someone wrote "all the family" which is strange, since I was told they were both only children! Perhaps her adoptive family? But I can't find her in the 1880 census at all--of course I'm having to look under the Dewyers name. I hoped to find her living with her mother's parents, the Spencers. But I can't identify them, either! And William E. was nowhere to be found in McLennan Co. He worked in West, where they were married. So I would suppose that he arrived in West shortly before their marriage, whether he came from KY then, or being a footloose bachelor travelling from place to place on odd jobs. Darn him! >-Have you checked the 1880 Soundex for Texas? If you haven't done so already, I'd check every Soundex from 1880 as far as they are available. I recall that one census taker in VA listed the county of birth in addition to the state. What a find! Yes, againl, I couldn't find either of them there. By the way, the soundex only listed families with children 10 and over, if I remember correctly. That counts out William, and Mary apparently didn't count yet. I really begin to think that she was born in 1871, rather than 1870 as she always said. That would make nine months after her parents marriage. But who knows! Although, if her mother died in childbirth, as the family story goes, it would be rather hard for her to marry Tim four months later! This family is a stumper on several sides! I haven't been able to find record that she was in any orphanages, either, or an adoption record. >-There are census indexes available for most years, states, I think. Have you checked them out to see if you can get a clue as to where in KY and where in TX? As far asboth states, I checked the 1880 census index, and nothing of a William Ellis Turner. If he was just listed as William Turner, heaven help me! Too many of them. He usually went by W. E. Turner, but still nothing helpful. >If I haven't already sent you the last mailing (can't remember a thing lately), I'll send it in a few minutes. Well, I just checked and I can't tell if I send you the 1st part and the 2nd part or neither. Just let me know what it is you got. Thanks. I got the second part, but not a first part. Thanks again for your interest! Frustrating that I'm finding so many blocks on this family, as this is my children's maiden names! Have the info under your nose and don't know it. Me it happens alot too :) It happens more times than I want to admit. Guess the more "stuff" you've collected the more times it can happen. Have you written to Waddie yet? Found out he lives in VA, too. I forgot, where do you live? Nyla =================== Subj: TURNER - are we related?? Date: 96-02-19 21:31:33 EST From: marockem@minot.ndak.net To: NCreed@aol.com I read in one of the genealogy newsgroups that you areresearching the TURNER family history. I wonder if we have any of the same names. The following information is the only information that I have on this branch. Christopher TURNER wed Arminta CUMMINS both are buried at Cummins (now called Hunt?) Cemetery east of Rose Hill, IL. They had at least two daughters: Jane (buried at Brooks Cemetery, rural Rose Hill, IL) and Lucinda "Cinda" born 1866 at Jasper Co. (IL?) and died in 1906 buried at Brooks Cemetery. Cinda married John Lee "Lee" CLINE in 1882. Thank you for your time. Annette (Hansen) Rockeman marockem@minot.ndak.net ============== End.
