Be sure to check out Chris Gaunt's home page where all our compilations are stored. Anything you care to share on your line will be appreciated. Some of you have mentioned the fact that some of the eMail addresses seem to be incomplete. I believe this happens when I receive eMail from another person who is also using AOL. Try adding @aol.com at the end of the address that is shown. That should work. A big thanks to everyone who has shared information. Your generosity has resulted in 152 Burnett-Turner-Ross-Via-Etc/Etc compilations. Nyla CREED DePauk San Diego CA ======================= Subj: Re: Comp 151 - Burnett-Turner-Ross-Via-Etc/Etc From: GDBurnette@aol.com Nyla, this John Greenberry BURNETT reunion is the John Greenberry Burnett I've been trying to get some info on relative to his parents!! The letter June references tells us lots about his early life: where he was born, when, his hunting, the fact he spoke Cherokee (why he was sent to aid in the Trail of Tears) and so on... Unfortunately, he didn't tell us who his parents were! In my last post, I said I thought it was Nicholoas because there was a Nicholas Burnett given land along Beaver Creek (the Kings Mill Iron works referenced was on Beaver Creek). Unfortunately, with Sullivan records being burned in 1860s (war), we've been unable to prove. One thing we've not yet tried is to attempt to see what happened to the Nicholas Burnett land (the Deeds didn't burn). John G always said in later census records his family came from VA -- but where ?!? I seem to be having a hard time with the website. I decided that I needed to go back and research Comps. 1-136 since I only recently began receiving your newsletter. Which, by the way, is fantastic, because I have gotten some names, and names are always something to work with. I tried to locate the zipped file of Comps. 1-81 and have been unable to locate them. I am not a computer genius and "operator error" are probably the keywords here. Thanks, Marcie ====================== Marcie, I'm not a computer expert either. Kevin does the zipping of the compilations. If you have any questions about the zipped compilations, check with him at: kevin2@falcon.cc.ukans.edu One suggestion. Work your way backwards through the compilations. A lot of the lines have been expanded and corrected. So, it can get confusing and might appear to be in conflict. Nyla ===================== Marcie- The compilations are in two zipped files on my website. The two files cover compilations 1-100, and 101-145 at this point. I will be updating the later file tomorrow to include compilations through number 151. Go to the webpage shown below, and click on the Burnett Family History icon at the left or the bottom of the page. There will be a link from this page to the download area. When you click that link, you'll find the two files, as well as links to WinZip 95 and PKZip, which you can use to "unzip" the files and put them back into readable form. The two icons for the files you need are the filing cabinets with c-clamps on them. If you click on the icon, your web browser should get the file information and ask you if you want to open the file or save it to disk. Choose save to disk, and you will be prompted to provide a directory in which to save the files. Your computer should then download the files from my website. Kevin K. S. Bradshaw that went with it. Contained within the speech is some family history of the lady. I pick out key pieces here but first let me say that notice her offspring that are Morehead are the ones that have governors. The governor of NC - James Turner is not of her family -I have his family tree and his father was Thomas Turner from Southhampton Co. VA and his family before that from Mass descendants of the Mayflower crowd in particular the Brewsters. Here is what it says in the book -Among the brave women who hastened to the field of the battle of Guilford Courthouse to minister to the wounded and the dying was Mrs. Kerenhappuch Turner whose sons and grandsons werew ith Gen Breene in this battle. Mrs. K. Turner was wife of James Turner one of the early settlers of Maryland. When she learned that one of her sons received a fearful wound in the battle of Guilford Courthouse the brave mother came to him riding on horseback all the way from her home in Maryland and nursed him back to life and service. Placing him in a log cabin beneath the bare rafters she bored holes in tubs which she suspended from these rafters above the ghastly wounds and keeping these tubs filled with cool water, from the creek near by the constant dripping upon the wound allayed the fever and she thus improves a treatment as efficacious as the ice pack of modern science. One of her daughters, Elizabeth mar Joseph Morehead of NC of Scotch ancestry.Another daughter Mary mar Charles the br of Joseph Morehead and left offspring in the West. Of these Gov Charels S. Morehead of Ky and his cousin Gov. James Turner Morehead of the same State have been in the senate too from KY. The North Carolina branch of the family has given to this state the late Gov. John M. Morehead and his brother Hon. James Turner Morehead at one time represented this district in Congress. The late Gov Morehead is survived by one son Maj. J. Turner Morehead now of NY City. The only surviving sons of the late Hon James Turner Morehead are Col James T. Morehead one of the members of the Greensboro bar and Maj. Joseph M Morehead Pres of the Guilford Battle Ground Com who conceived the idea of erecting the monument of Kerenhappuch Turner. Along with Maj. J. Turner Morehead of NY city. ====================== Subj: Hello TURNER cousin Date: 97-07-18 12:58:55 EDT From: N4JED@aol.com To: Sharaim@aol.com CC: NCreed1@aol.com Sharon, Hello third cousin with a common ancestor of Samuel Claiborne TURNER - my great great grandfather. Also, since I am so new to the newsletter area, I received some very helpful tools this week from the LDS FHC. It is a Family Group Record chart and they also gave me a Pedigree Chart which my mom had already given me. I had been so lazy and was working with notes. AAAAGGGGHHH!!!!!!! Filling out these charts has put my info right together and has been so much easier to work with. I'm sure you probably already know about these charts, but you might want to add it to a compilation as a reminder for some who don't know about them yet. I'm not able to afford expensive family history software and so I did purchase a Swift Family Ancestry CD. Stay away from it. It's only $10 and I got what I paid for. When you want to see the whole family at one time, it's so small, a magnifying glass won't help. And to print it? Oh, forget it. It's good for having the information on a family with ancestry and descendancy on a disc, but as far as printing and sharing or compiling the info on a hard copy it's not. Thanks for the info and I will give me an e-mail. Marcie ========================== Subj: Maybe we are related... We need to look at your mother and my mother's lines. My grandfather was a SINK from Franklin County area. There are many FISHERS married into it. Also JAMISONS married into several lines I have. Also have quite a few NEFFS but most of them married into my REPASS line from the Wythe County area. Looking further through your letter... yes a couple RUSH members married to SINK line here in Virginia and, oh yes, an unknown RONK ca 1860's married to George SINK. Does any of this look familiar? Will post this to the net in case any others have an interest in these lines and I look forward to hearing more about your mother's side of the family. Nyla ======================== Subj: Turner's in Iowa Date: 97-07-19 13:36:34 EDT From: VFTurner2@aol.com My Bedford Co. Turner's (Albert, son of Meador and Piety Hackworth) finally settled in Page and Taylor Co., Iowa, via Preble and Clinton Countys, Ohio. Albert and his wife, Elizabeth Hiatt, had eleven children, eight of which lived to adulthood. The only male was my GGrandfather, Asher Hiatt Turner. The other seven, all women, are the subject of this message. I would like to findout what happened to their descendents. The seven are as follows: 1. Narcissus M. Turner, b: 8/6/1843, Clinton Co., Ohio; m: John West, 2/22/1874, Taylor Co., Iowa. 2. Rosena J. Turner, b: 6/20/1856, Clinton Co., Ohio; m: Lorenzo Kent, 2/1862, Page Co. Iowa. My Grandfather, Alonzo Turner, tells how he was born (1885) in a "dugout" house on the farm of 'Ren Kent, in Lincoln Co., Kansas. I have land records and census records of Lorenzo Kent's short time in Lincoln Co. 3. Mary Ellen Turner, b: 7/1/1849, Clinton Co., Ohio: m: Benjamin Kelso, 3/16/1865, Page Co., Iowa. I have a copy of a land tranaction, where Albert transfers a parcel of land, 16 rods x 24 rods, to the township for $40. The land was to used to erect a school. The representative who made the deal for the township, was Benjamin Kelso, his son-in-law. Benjamin and Mary Ellen are buried in the Memory Cemetary, Page Co. Their marker is an obelisk, with the notation, of a child, who died and was buried in Indiana. 4. Sarah Alice Turner, b: 8/11/1853, Clinton Co, Ohio; m: Alfred H. Raynor, 7/3/1873, Taylor Co. Iowa. Like the Kent's, the Raynors lived and farmed for a while in Lincoln Co., Kansas. The History of Taylor Co. Iowa, lists several Raynors, but there is no mention of a relationship with Alfred. 5. Laura F. Turner, b: 3/26/1856, Clinton Co., Ohio, m: William D. Harris, 2/28/1877, Taylor Co., Iowa. The Harris's are both buried in the Memory Cemetary. My GGrandfather, Asher, (Laura's brother) is also buried in their plot. 6. Emma C. Turner, b: 5/16/1860, Page Co., Iowa; m: John H. Beale, 2/6/1861. Mayville, Missouri (just over the state line from Taylor Co.). 7. Demaries May Turner, b: 2/9/1863, Page Co., Iowa; m: Orlando V. Long,MD, 3/1/1883, Taylor Co.,Iowa. She went by May, but died, 11/26/1905. Dr. Long, who was highly regarded physician in Gravity, Iowa, remarried, and died in 1916 of a heart attach. He and May had a daughter, Myrtle. I would appreciate any information about any of these families. My Grandfather tells of visiting his Turner cousins in Southern Califonia, in 1965. I believe that they were Beale cousins, but I can't say for sure, nor can I say that they were the only family represented.
