May 09 2004:

Added another peppermint shrimp about a week ago, since we hadn't seen one of ours for about 2 weeks. (I'll add a picture at some point). (Note: the missing shrimp reappeared a few days later!)

Added a purple ricordia May 2:

The mushroom that came in on the live rock (circled in green) split again (new one circled in red).

The first one that split off moved out onto some algae, and ended up floating loose around the tank. I put in in a hole in another rock (using a turkey baster!) and it seems to be doing fine, but is hard to see.

In case you're wondering what that light pink/purple colored crud growing on the back of the tank is:

it's coralline algae, a kind of algae that is pink to purple in color and grows a calcium-based skeleton, like corals. For some coral reefs it's the main source of growth near the surface. It's a good thing to have, especially because once it takes over it makes it hard for the more annoying green algaes to grow. It's a real pain to clean off too, it takes a lot of scrubbing to keep the front glass clean.
