Pacific Studies WWW Virtual Library, edited by Dr. T. Matthew Ciole, and 'Alopi Latukefu. This site is a member of the South Pacific Information Network and of the Asian Studies WWW VL archipelago of scholarly web sites. It contains a catalog of online resources, links to electronic forums and discussion groups, a collection of bibliographies on anthropology of the Pacific, online maps, and more.

ArTok: Pacific Arts Online. An ABC-Online/Radio Australia initiative. Articles on music, dance, performance, issues, words, crafts, visual arts, body art. Includes coverage of the 8th Festival of Pacific Arts in New Caledonia, 2000.

 

Music Archive for the Pacific. "Established by the Southern Cross University, Lismore, Australia . . . the archive covers the music of the indigenous people of Australia (incl. Torres Strait), Papua New Guinea (incl. Bougainville), New Zealand as well as the nations of the Pacific Islands - Cook Islands, Easter Island, Fiji, Hawaii, Nauru, New Caledonia, Rarotonga, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tahiti, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu." Travel Books & Indigenous Music. Kangaroo Explorers

Mundo Etnico Foundation. This Dutch non profit organization is dedicated to promoting traditional, contemporary and developing Pacific cultures by means of book and CD publications, workshops, seminars and educational programmes. All programmes and publications are the result of field work research trips to the islands by Ad and Lucia Linkels.

Pacific Islands Music. "A list of mostly noncommercial recordings that are faithful to the traditional music of the islands as it exists today. Island music based on Western pop has been avoided." Compiled by David Stanley. The CDs listed are linked to their pages at Amazon.com

Oceania Records. This Paris-based record label is issuing anthologies of contemporary popular musics and "worldbeat." Pan-Pacific in coverage, there is particular emphasis on areas in Melanesia.

"Radio Happy Isles," by Robert Seward

Melanesian Studies Resource Center and Melanesian Archive, University of California, San Diego. The collection includes audio recordings deposited by researchers who worked in various regions of Melanesia; there is also a list of films and videos, some of which include music and/or dance content.

Where to buy CDs, videotapes, books, instruments, etc

Hokomaha. This site offers musical instruments and CDs of contemporary and traditional Maori music from Aotearoa (New Zealand).

Hawaiian Music Island One of the largest sites offering Hawaiian CDs and videotapes for sale. There is a small selection of Pacific Islands CDs and videotapes, including videos from Tahiti. The proprietor, Auntie Maria, maintains a comprehensive collection of links, and also offers a page of recommendations by genre.

Tropical Disc. A CD shop on Maui offering general music, with special emphasis on Hawaiian musicians and Maui-based performers and recording artists.
