RPG Board Games?

Is there such a thing as a board game that is also an RPG? Just
curious.
Kinda wondered about this particular section of WIG. Then again, if
it's
for any kind of game, I guess I can say that I don't mind playing Axis
and Allies, Monopoly (star wars edition was interesting), Risk and a
game
I haven't played in awhile which I liked as a kid called 'Survival'. At
least I think that was the name. Had an island that was falling away
and
you had to get your people off the island to a different island without
drowning or getting eaten by sharks. heheh...
Take care,
M.

10/9/99 10:15 PMWell, I hadn't intended Women in Gaming to be just for rpgers... It's sort of worked out that way because that's what I searched by when I invited people to join and because that's where my own interests lie.

10/10/99 04:22 PMTalisman, Heroquest, Dungeon Dice, The Dungeons and Dragons board game (it's hard to find though.) Heroquest is the closest. It has pre-made characters, spells, and encounters but requires a dm/narrator. It's fun, so is Talisman. My husband also made a Twin Peaks board game, loosely based on Talisman. It's a riot.

10/11/99 10:48 AMThere's also a neat board game a friend of mine bought at GenCon called "Maul of America", where you play shoppers in a mall trying to collect supplies and get out while dodging zombies. The game's controller is in charge of the zombies, and there are as many RPG elements as you want, when you're yelling at your friends for taking the best weapons, etc. It's a lot of fun.

10/11/99 04:47 PMClosest that I can think of is Talisman, Heroquest & Bloodbowl, but Bloodbowl is pushing it a bit.

10/12/99 11:36 AMI used to love a game called Dungeon - kind of close to an RPG. You run around the board killing monsters or attacking the other players until you have enough money to win. Had some neat aspects in the advanced version - getting wounded, different character classes, teleportation and spells. Had it as a kid, but they put out a new edition over 5 years ago.

10/13/99 04:10 PMThe closest thing I've seen recently is Steve Jackson Games's *Tribes*.
Basic premise: It's 50,000 BC, and you and your fellow tribesmen are trying to provide for your families. The object of the game is to have the most children survive to adulthood (age 12). It's a fascinating little game, and the RPG elements are as elaborate as you want (additional tribe rules/taboos, improvising religious elements, intertribe conflicts, etc.).
I would never abuse this question by bringing up board games that make me speak with ridiculous accents, like Junta ('Oh, eet has been a very bad yeeeer...') or Kremlin ('Badenuff is nogoonik! Off to Siberia!')... ;)

10/17/99 10:25 PMTalisman is an out of print board game by Games Workshop and is very like an RPG with characters that you develop as the game goes on and a whole bunch of supplements. If you can find a copy, definitely pick it up.
