For a great gaming experience, that for the most part is free (unless you become a resident) goto The Gamer's Inn http://www.gamersinn.com

It's great fun :0)

If you are interested in the white wolf roleplaying games then try:  http://www.white-wolf.com.  Go to the interactive section then click on chat. It's possible to have fun here, but unfortunately their server crashes periodically. Other then that it's a pretty free-form sort of roleplaying. Have fun :-)

Dear Sairk,
There is a great deal more gaming on the net than you would think...the main problem is finding a controlled gaming environment....I stopped gaming online after running into a problem with power gamers who tweaked their characters at convenience.....

Good luck with your quest!

Does anybody have any recommendations for good role playing sites? Warnings about bad ones?

I know they exist, but I've never actually looked for them because I'm afraid of the time that yet another game would eat up.

Well, if you want something like Ultima Online, try EverQuest. Fennin Ro is the official roleplay server and you might want to stay away from some of the other ones for that reason. It's a controlled envirionment, though, which helps a lot, despite some bugs and packet loss problems.

many places to game        Posted by:  C. B. in response to gaming on the net

I have been online for a couple years now and have found that most the big chat services have gaming rooms.

wbs.net is one that has many rooms in several genre;s the major problems i have seen in it is its a 24/7 environ you have to play almost nightly to keep up sometimes and its mostly freeform.

talkcity.com has a few rooms though i really haven;t checked into it

there is a place called islad fortress chat that is exclusively RP.

thats all i remember off the top of my head the real trick is to get a group together by Email or however and make a night and go to some chat service in a private room and play...

Online RP        Posted by:  K. B. in response to gaming on the net

I should probably introduce myself if I intend to keep posting. I'll get to that in the next few days. Promise.

As for online RP, there are a few options, depending on what you're looking for.

My tabletop group was recently torn assunder and its members flung about to different parts of the country. We've all been lamenting not being able to play together anymore, so we're putting together a TORG game using WebRPG (http://www.webrpg.com/). WebRPG has a freeware program you can download and use to run a tabletop game over the Internet. You bring your rules, your characters, etc., they supply the dice and the table. (I'm pretty sure that's how it works, I haven't played with it too much yet.)

If you're looking for a more established, immersive, massively multiplayer online RPG (so I can't get rid of the marketing terms, I used to co-run a gaming site), I've always preferred text based to graphical. That said, for a long time my greatest addiction (and the place I met my husband) was a text based on online RPG called GemStone. GS, and it's sister game DragonRealms, were the best online games I ever tried. Things change, of course, and the games started being offered in larger and larger markets, so I don't play anymore. But for someone used to an environment like that in Ultima or EverQuest, GS's world of Elanthia might seem like a balm. The snerts are still there, but at least the game mechanics themselves aren't turned against female characters.

There are also a HUGE number of MUDs, MUXs, MUSEs, etc. out there that you might want to try. Try http://www.mudconnect.com/. They have by far the largest list of these types of games.

Good luck!
